Central bank rates and US data

By M.M. · Page updated 5 November 2026

Policy rates by region, US CPI and unemployment from FRED, and the next central bank reviews. The figures are the same daily snapshot the app uses. Opening this page does not call the data providers again.

The notes say what each figure does to holdings you already own. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.

Policy rates by region

A policy rate is the short term interest rate a central bank sets for the banking system. For a stock you own, today's level is the starting point. What reprices the shares is a change in the expected path: how long the rate stays here, and where later meetings take it.

Cash flows that sit years out move more when that path changes. Debt that floats, or that comes due soon, is where the interest bill itself changes. A bank can gain on the deposit spread and lose on credit costs in the same decision.

BIS rows are the Bank for International Settlements series. Manual rows are decisions that series does not carry, taken from the central bank's own page, with the date of that decision. A stale flag means the as of date is more than 12 months before today.

Two longer notes: what a central bank rate decision means for your holdings and when a rate move reaches the cash. Bank balance sheets: JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America. Debt that reprices soon: Apple, Disney, Oracle.

US CPI and unemployment

US CPI here is the year over year change in the consumer price index. Unemployment is the share of the labor force without a job and looking for one. Both are the FRED prints stored in the snapshot. One month is noisy. The trend is what shifts the expected path of policy.

The Federal Reserve's inflation target is the PCE price index, so CPI is the early public read, not the target itself. A run of hot CPI prints keeps the expected policy rate higher, which weighs on long dated cash flows and on borrowers who refinance soon. A rising unemployment rate can pull that path down, and it can also mean weaker sales for companies that sell to US households.

The guide is how to read CPI and unemployment without overreacting. Sector paths are in which sectors react to which shocks. US household demand shows up in names such as Walmart and Home Depot.

US CPI and unemployment are not listed because the snapshot has no FRED print for them.

Next central bank reviews

The next date is when a new statement, and sometimes new forecasts, can change the path. The rate number is often the part the market already expected. The count of days is from today, so a scheduled review stays separate from a surprise.

Put the date on a calendar with a ten minute portfolio monitoring routine. Stress that does not move with the policy rate is covered in credit spreads as an early warning.
